Charles Whitcombe holds the professionals course record set in June 1937 of 59 (see below), despite all the equipment improvements it still stands proud. He and his 2 brothers represented GB in the Ryder Cup in 1935 – unlikely to ever be equaled. His brother Reg won the British Open. Charles led the Open on numerous occasions, but never won it. He did win the matchplay championship amongst many other British and Irish titles. Charles played in the Ryder Cup from 1927 to 1937, he captained the side four times.

When Charles retired in 1950 his assistant, Len Mitchell, son of Ryder Cup "icon" Abe Mitchell stood in. Abe Mitchell stands proudly on top of the Ryder Cup.   The course score card below shows the current course record at Crews Hill Golf Club, a spectacular 59.
